Mehmet Dere plays on space and time with distinctive irony and a gently mocking tone. Starting from an image of a curious scene found on a street market, the artist goes on to suggest a more profound enquiry into the history of democracy in Turkey. Where do we come from, and where are we going? Why do we find the first of these questions more interesting?
The hands on the clock go into reverse motion, as does the order of characters posing against a white background. When the clock starts to turn 'anticlockwise ' and thus ceases to function the joke turns into a fundamental question: 'Do you have time'. Can you spare any time to consider the future of democracy? Just a few minutes for some self-criticism?
